There have been a great many games like Minecraft over the past decade. Which is to be expected, because who wouldn't want to capitalise on the runaway mainstream success of the geometric giant, one of the best-selling video games of all time? Minecraft has many interesting facets about it beyond the block bashing mechanics, so we've compiled our list of the best games like it out there right now so you can scratch that familiar mining and crafting itch.
]]>I really like the look of Siege! [official site], an upcoming local multiplayer brawler from developers 2nd Studio.
Each game starts by both teams building a castle fitted out with cannons. Then, all hell breaks lose. Cannon balls fly, stone walls crumble, and your knight takes to the turf, slashing his sword. Once you've destroyed your opponent's base and killed the King inside, you win.
]]>Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.
It’s unfortunate that King Arthur’s Gold looks like Terraria, Starbound and the rest of that ilk. Because it is absolutely nothing like those games. What we have here is a tiny, heroic arcade murderfest between teams of 16 players on a medieval battleground that can be populated with huge towers and dastardly tunnels. It’s also the only game for which I’ve written a Steam review. Which must say something about it’s quality, but I’m not sure what.
]]>King Arthur’s Gold has been knocking about for years, quietly existing in the shadow of similar games like Terraria, Minecraft and Ace of Spades. In that time the creators (those who brought you Soldat) have been chipping away and sculpting an unassuming yet heroic little game of insane siege warfare. Now that it has taken its complete form and has been deemed beautiful enough for Steam, it is finally time to give this medieval muckabout some of the attention it deserves. Here’s Wot I Think.
]]>Soldat creators, Transhuman Design, have finally got King Arthur's Gold out of alpha and onto Steam, heralding the official release. Looking like a cross between Terraria, Ace Of Spades, and a fever dream about some chickens. The launch trailer is a rather pleasant watch.
]]>It was 2011 when RPS took its first and only look at King Arthur's Gold, a 2D multiplayer action game from the makers of Soldat that's been inspired by Minecraft, Age of Empires, and TF2. It remained in alpha (Alphurian?) for all the time in between. That time was well spent: new graphics have been chiseled out, and there's now mod support. Merlin waved his wand (tee-hee), and now the ever-so silly medieval multiplayer game has grown some teeth. It is beta, it is buyable, and it looks like a lot of fun. I have hollowed out a hole for some videos beneath.
]]>Friend of RPS Phill Cameron pinged this at me this morning, the sweetie- indie project King Arthur's Gold is big ol' team-based multiplayer battle with an emphasis on destructible terrain and constructing defenses. In essence, it's a 2D, medieval interpretation of the incredible Ace of Spades. Which was, of course, a more combative interpretation of Minecraft. Between this and Terraria, we've got quite a commendable amount of larceny going on. It's so nice seeing those strong ideas honed and repurposed.
